This is great! Photographer Jordan Hollender and musician Scott Harris put together this music video that covers Survivor’s classic anthem and uses only iPad apps as instruments. The video itself was recorded with a couple of Canon HDSLR video cameras, but as you can see in the embedded version above, all of the music is created with iPad apps. Unfortunately, they don’t identify the apps used, but that sounds like a great job for you TUAW commenters. I think I saw Pianolo HD being played on the floor there, and Pocket Drums is being used as percussion, but I couldn’t find the guitar app or the DJ app that they are using.

Of course, what I really want to know is where he got that sweet lightning bolt iPad strap. The video’s great, though. Apparently it was all lit in one day and shot in another. There’s no word on how long it took to make the song, but with the iPad involved, it was probably both magical and revolutionary.

You can’t deny, it’s pretty metaphysically silly to be playing a board game your parents bought at a yard sale for $2 on a $500+ iPad, in conjunction with two or more $200+ iPhones. Mix in service plans, accessories, the price of the app ($10), and the bribes you’ll have to pay your friends to join in on something so embarrassing, and you’re really pushing the limits of common sense with Scrabble for the iPad. But we will say this: it is pretty cool. We just paired up a couple iPhones (running the free Tile Rack app) and joined in with the iPad over Bluetooth or WiFi (the app makes it unclear as to which particular wireless tech is doing the honors at the moment, but both work) and in moments we were swiping tiles up to the iPad with the best of them.

Surprisingly, it makes a game of scrabble go much faster, since the computer does all those difficult maths for you, but the experience isn’t without its shortcomings. If you exit the Scrabble app to the home screen, or accidentally brush the “Menu” button on the iPad app, your game is completely gone. There isn’t even a helpful warning like “are you sure you want to end this game you just invested an hour of your life into without even saving or something?” There not even an option to save a game and resume at later date. The app is more forgiving if you drop a connection with your iPhone, or lock the screen on the iPad for a moment, but we’d really appreciate it if EA rounded off some of these rough edges before we chuck the iPad across the room in a Scrabble-induced rage. “The Pinball” ist ein kleines “Technik Mecca”, und deswegen bekommt es seinen eigenen Artikel.

Der bekannte Flipper kann ab kostenlos für den Mac runtergeladen werden. Zusätzlich dazu bekommt man eine ebenfalls kostenfreie iPhone App, mit der man über Wlan das Spiel mit seinem iPhone oder iPod Screen in NintendoDS Manier steuern kann…

Als wenn die liebevolle Grafik nicht genug wäre, kann man einen 3D Effekt für die drei üblichen “2 Farben Stereoskop Brillen” aktivieren, die ingame Vibration anschalten, und ein ziemlich cooles “Camera Tilt” bei dem man den Betrachtungswinkel des Flippertisches durch das bewegen des iPhones beeinflussen und den Tisch “Schütteln” kann

Der Tisch WildWest ist dabei, weitere können per inApp purchase dazu gekauft werden.

Wenn man jetzt noch sein Display um 90 Grad dreht (in “Echt”, und unter Systemeinstellungen/Monitor), das ganze vielleicht noch schräg vor sich auf den Tisch legt, bei bedarf die Kameraeinstellungen auf kompletter Tisch stellt, die 3D Brille anzieht und sein iPhone zum Flipperspielen startet – hat man sich einen ziemlich coolen digitalen Flippertisch gebaut, oder bekommt mindestens eine recht schicke Techdemo unserer aktuellen Gadgets.

TIpps:

Im “the Pinball” auf euerm Mac: ” CMD + , ” drücken um in die Einstellungen zu kommen. Dort gibt es ausser Grafiksettings auch “Fullscreen on Startup” ausschalten. Das macht sinn bei Multimonitoren usw.
(Fullscreen toggel mit cmd+F, geht aber meist nur auf dem Hauptdisplay, zur not muss man es wechseln indem man unter “Systemeinstellungen/Monitore/Monitore anordnen” die kleine Menübar aus dem blauen Hauptdisplay in das andere zieht.)

Andere Tische: in der iPhone App im Hautpmenü über das Tischlogo in der Mitte wischen, oder 3 Fingerwischen mit dem Trackpad nach Links oder Rechts oder wenn das Spiel im Fenster läuft in die Menüleiste auf Tables

Tischansicht umstellen (Fulltable / dynamic Camera): die ” C ” Taste auf der Tastatur drücken…

Steuern kann man die Tische auch ohne iPhone. Enter zum Start, Shift links und rechts für die Pins, Leertaste zum Tilt und um die Kugel ins Spiel zu schubsen die Pfeiltaste nach unten.

iDisplay:

Mit der iPad und iPhone App “iDisplay” ist Heute ein Tool für 3,99€ erschienen, um die beiden Geräte als zweiten Monitor am Mac (PC bald) zu betreiben und zusätzlich noch als Toucscreen zu verwenden.
Man installiert sich ein komplett deinstallierbares Programm (wahrscheinlich ein auf VNC basierter  Client) auf dem Rechner, und die beiden Geräte per Wlan zu verbinden.

Leider ist das ganze noch nicht so schnell und beendet zusätzlich den Dienst des öfteren wegen Programmfehlern… (kann aber sofort neu gestartet werden)
Am besten nutzt man nur die schnelle Touchfunktion um das Display zu bedienen, denn die Maus kann ab und an verzögern oder ruckeln… Sortieren und verschieben kann man die Fenster (solange man nicht 3 Displays nutzt) am besten per “Spaces Übersicht”…

(Nach der Installation + reboot müsst ihr eure ScreenAuflösung wieder definieren. Dazu geht ihr auf den Apfel in der Menüleiste, Systemsteinstellungen, Monitor, Anordnen, und schaltet “Bildschirme synchronisieren” aus. Danach könnt ihr eure Displays nach euren wünschen Anordnen und einstellen…

Drei und mehr Displays:

Mit Hilfe der Tools könnt ihr auch drei der mehr Displays verbinden. Oben sehr ihr testweise die Anordnung in den Systemeinstellungen: mein iPhone per Wlan, mein MacBook Pro und mein 2.Monitor per DVI Kabel (den ich gern mal hochkant stelle…)

ScreenRecycler:

ScreenResycler geht nach dem selben Prinzip vor, nutzt aber ein Display das an einen anderen Computer angeschlossen ist. Dabei ist es egal ob ihr einen iMac, euren alten G4 Mini oder einen PC nutzt.

Ausserdem: Dualscreen GameCombi aus Mac und iPhone

Neu ist das kostenlose Spiel “The Pinball” für den Mac, es kann in NintendoDS manier mit dem iPhone gesteuert werden… Der Tisch WildWest ist dabei, weitere können per inApp purchase dazu gekauft werden.

How many scientists does it take to properly install a lightbulb? When that lightbulb is an implant that stimulates retinal photoreceptors to restore one’s sight, quite a few — even if they disagree whether said implant should be placed on top of the retina (requiring glasses to supply power and video feed) or underneath, using photocells to channel natural sunlight. Now, a German firm dubbed Retina Implant has scored a big win for the subretinal solution with a three-millimeter, 1,500 pixel microchip that gives patients a 12 degree field of view. Conducting human trials with 11 patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, the company successfully performed operations on seven, with one even managing to distinguish between similar objects (knife, fork, spoon) and perform very basic reading. Though usual disclaimers apply — the tech is still a long way off, it only works on folks who’ve slowly lost their vision, etc. — this seems like a step in the right direction, and at least one man now knows which direction that is.

The rotors are built out of a carbon / Kevlar composite and are powered by a two-liter V4 two-stroke engine capable of delivering 200hp (or 150kW). Good old gasoline is the fuel of choice here and private individuals are expected to be offered the chance to fulfill every geek and geekette’s dream later this year. Just make sure you have $86,000 lying around to fund it.
