RePost: write iPhone and iPad apps without knowing Objective C with revMobile

March 5th, 2010

from tuaw.com:

One of the biggest barriers to entry for people who want to develop their own iPhone apps is the requirement to actually know how to program in Objective C. Runtime Revolution (AKA RunRev) has been developing and marketing a HyperCard-like development environment since 1997. To quote the company’s site, “Rev uses plain-English words and phrases for most of its operations, eliminating the obscure symbols and complicated structures required of other programming languages. Rev is easy to learn and use, requires 90% less code, and can deliver a 10-fold increase in productivity over traditional languages.”

What does this have to do with developing for iPhone and iPad? The answer is simple — the company is stretching the development environment to the mobile computing market with a new product, currently in pre-alpha, called revMobile. For developers who want to market their products to the widest possible range of mobile devices, revMobile not only supports the iPhone and iPad world, but Nokia’s Maemo platform and Windows Mobile 7 as well. Since apps can also run on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux, this represents a very robust development environment. The video at the top of this post shows a simple game being conceptualized, designed, and written in a little over 3 hours.

RunRev has always been compiled at runtime, but for the purposes of getting RunRev apps into the App Store, revMobile apps are going to be compiled at build time so that a single executable is available for submission. You can find out more about revMobile, including pricing and availability, at the RunRev website.

A Flower Chain – wunderbares iPhone Spiel

February 2nd, 2010

flower chain.jpg

February 2nd, 2010

microsim
We’ve finally found ourselves a solid, confirmed shot of a micro SIM in the wild, thanks to an FCC filing from Lok8u — the company that just inked a deal with T-Mobile — that shows the innards of its GPS watch torn asunder. Over on the right there is one of the micro SIMs in question, and as you can clearly make out, the contact pad is identical to the one you’d find on a traditional SIM (that shot of an AT&T unit that we’d posted earlier was actually a mockup by our own Sean Cooper, you see). In other words, if you were really hard up to get that iPad up and running on a network that isn’t providing micros, you could probably shoehorn a traditional SIM in there with a little elbow grease and handiwork, which happily matches up with information we’ve been hearing from several contacts of ours. Who knew Lok8u would be so important in this investigative process?

Pad UI gets ported to the iPhone and iPod touch

At this particular point, 50-something days away from the earliest iPad deliveries, we doubt too many people are up in arms about the iPad’s ability to act as a jumbo iPhone. On the other hand, if we told you you can take pretty much the entire iPad experience and distill it down to your iPhone OS device, well you’d probably care a lot more, wouldn’t you? To get that extra 3D flavor to your UI, including the fetching iBooks shelf and other iPad-specific touches, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, access to the Cydia app store, and the manpower to click past the break for the full instructional video. Come on, you know you want to.

iPhone 3D Rollenspiel Ravensword

November 17th, 2009

VIA: iPhone Ticker

“The Ravensword game world is surprisingly detailed for an iPhone game, and performs remarkably well. Along the way you will equip your character with all kinds of different magical items and slay hordes of enemies as the main quest line slowly reveals your character’s mysterious identity.

Dutch hacker seeks out jailbroken iPhones for fame and fortune

November 5th, 2009
iphone-jailbreak-11-03-09.png

Jailbreaking an iPhone certainly brings many benefits, but it’s also fraught with some peril, as amply demonstrated by a Dutch hacker who decided to go snooping around for vulnerable jailbroken iPhones in the Netherlands. While he apparently didn’t actually swipe personal information or cause any damage, he was able to find some jailbroken iPhones with SSH running, which allowed him to display a message saying “Your iPhone’s been hacked because it’s really insecure! Please visit doiop.com/iHacked and secure your iPhone right now!” A noble gesture of a white hat hacker? Not exactly, ’cause that site demands €5 for the “fix” to let folks go back to using their phone securely — or it did until the hacker apparently had a change of heart and posted the instructions for free, along with an apology for his misguided moneymaking scheme.

WordPress 2 hits the App Store

October 29th, 2009

WordPress 2 sports an entirely redesigned interface that makes it easier to moderate comments, edit pages, and create new posts. WordPress 2 also fixes a number of problems the previous app had connecting to self-hosted WordPress installs (WordPress 2 is compatible with both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress installs, though it requires WordPress 2.7 or higher).

The updated app also adds a handful of enhancements: posts are automatically saved so they won’t be lost if you lose network connectivity, commenter gravatars are displayed (if you have them enabled on your blog), and you can enter a custom XML-RPC endpoint (for those that know what this means it’s quite exciting).

You can find out more about WordPress 2 at the WordPress for iPhone blog and the Making WordPress for iPhone blog (remember the WordPress app is open source).

WordPress users on the go will be happy to hear thatWordPress 2, a significant update to the WordPress app, is now available from the App Store. Interestingly, WordPress 2 is listed as an entirely new app, so if you have the WordPress 1.0 app on your iPhone you won’t be notified about the update. You have to download WordPress 2 on its own, though you can have both versions installed on your iPhone/iPod touch.

MMS for iPhone 2G and tethering on OS 3.1.2 explained, not for the faint of heart

October 20th, 2009

Let’s be clear upfront that this isn’t for the casual iPhone jailbreaker, but if you feeling like living on the edge, you can give your original model an added boost of MMS capability, or any device with OS 3.1.2 the power to tether. Highlighted in a series of tweets today by iPhone dev team lead MuscleNerd, whiterat (for MMS) and two-bit (for tethering) will get the job done, but both require tinkering with the baseband, which is exponentially more advanced and brick-inducing than, say, installing Cydia. Venture forth with the instructions beyond the read links below.
